The Art of Freedom

Doing It Ourselves, silk painting

If you want to do anything you simply need to believe you can…

August 23 – November 13 2011

This exhibition has come out of the art project ‘Doing it Ourselves’. Volunteers from Lancashire Centre for Independent Living (LCIL) and Disability Equality North West (DENW) supported each other in exploring new artistic techniques, expressing their feelings and concerns about independent living in visual media whilst creating new artworks for the exhibition.

The Social Model of Disability is very relevant to this exhibition.

Definition: A way of describing the discrimination experienced by disabled people in living an independent life in society. Society disables people who have impairments because the way it has been set up prevents disabled people taking part in everyday life.

“You only get one bite of the cherry, if you want something just go for it!!

The ‘Doing it Ourselves’ project gave me the opportunity to try out new skills and to express my thoughts on independence with support and how it makes me feel. It gave me inspiration to express myself.”

Jane Titherington, artist and participant

“I never paint dreams or nightmares. I paint my own reality”

Frida Kahlo, artist, 1907- 1954 (disabled artist)
